cordierite, lolite specimen from Sri Lanka

What is Cordierite?

Cordierite is a magnesium iron aluminum cyclosilicate mineral, best known for its pleochroism, meaning it shows different colors when viewed from different angles. Often appearing in shades of violet-blue to smoky gray, Cordierite can shift from yellowish to deep indigo depending on the light and orientation. When cut as a gemstone, it is known as iolite, a name derived from the Greek word ios, meaning violet.

Historical Significance The name "cordierite" originates from French geologist and mining engineer Pierre Louis Antoine Cordier (1777-1861). It's found in Sri Lanka, India, and Madagascar.
